Gujarati Samaj of New York hosts grand Diwali celebration

Traditional dresses, authentic food, a musical program, and a happy crowd, all went into making the Gujarati Samaj of New York’s Diwali celebrations a very successful event in Queens. 

The celebrations were capped by the visit of the Mayor of New York City Eric Adams and Deputy Commissioner Dilip Chauhan along with President Harshad Patel and Executive Committee members who lit the traditional lamp. 

Emceed by Dr. Sheetal Desai, the event highlighted the accomplishments of the Gujarati Samaj of New York for five decades which includes a number of community activities including health camps, cultural programs and more. 

President of Gujarati Samaj of New York Harshad Patel mentioned that he is very humbled by the presence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is the first mayor in the last 48 years to visit the Gujarati Samaj of New York City.  

He also applauded the presence of Deputy Commissioner Dilip Chauhan who is always there to help the community whether they have questions related to Minority/Women run Business Enterprises or any permissions required. “Their presence and support have boosted morale of our South Asian community. We are filled with renewed inspiration and hope to continue to serve NYC in whatever way possible for years to come,” Patel said.    

Gujarati Samaj President Harshad Patel and his wife Daxa Patel welcomed Mayor Eric Adams with traditional garland and shawl as did Program Manager Divyesh Tripathi and his wife Ami Tripathi who welcomed Deputy Commissioner Dilip Chauhan.  

The program was attended by 700 Gujaratis including Past President Raman Patel, Dr. Bhupi Patel, H K Shah and many dignitaries including Senator John Liu.
